Make Your Gmail workflow faster with auto-advance

Did you know Gmail has a time-saving feature called “Auto-advance”? If you’re someone who likes processing emails quickly, this trick is for you.

Ok, let’s say it’s the morning. You open your inbox and start going through the email. You might start with the oldest unread email, and you open that up. Then, you start going through each email by clicking the arrow at the top to get to the next newest unread email. Or maybe you hit “j” on your keyboard.

Right? That’s pretty normal stuff. You go through all your emails.

But let’s say while you are in the process of going through your emails, there’s one you want to trash. If you click the trash icon, you are booted back to the list of emails. When I trash an email, I don’t want to go back to the list of emails. I simply want to advance to the next email in the list.

With “Auto-advance” enabled, when you trash an email, it brings up the next email. You can stay in the flow without constantly returning to your inbox.

Here’s how to enable the setting:

  1. Click on the gear icon
  2. Choose “See all settings”
  3. Head to the “Advanced” tab.
  4. Make sure “Auto-advance” is set to “Enable”

I just set this up myself, and it’s a game-changer! Give it a try, and let me know if it helps make your inbox flow smoother!
