Chicagoan or American?

Do you identify yourself more with your country, state, or city? I’d say I’m more of a Chicagoan than an American. I can’t exactly say why, but perhaps it has to do with that I don’t completely agree with our current presidential administration. But I don’t always agree with Mayor Daley either.

I’m more Chicagoan than American, probably because I haven’t traveled overseas, so I never really have existed outside the context of America. Whereas with Chicago, I can definitely contrast that more against other cities.

And I never thought of myself as an Illinoisian.

i’m a displaced Chicagoan living in the burbs. A lot of America is uneducated, uncultured, and short-sighted. The urban settings tend to be the opposite. I proud to be a native Chicagoan. Our country desperately needs more culture. The U.S. of A. could learn a few things from cities like New York and Chicago.

Excellent question. I would have to rank my associations, with closest at top: 1. Californian 2. San Franciscan (where I lived most of my adult life) 3. Ventura County-an (CA) (where I live now and where both sides of my family are from) 4. American 5. Bostonian (where I was born, where I have a lot of family, and where the Red Sox are) 6. Arizonan (where I grew up) 7. Earthling 8. Dane (I am 1/4 Danish) 9. New Yorker (where I went to high school) 10. Berkelelyite (CA) (where I went to college for 2 years)

I think of myself as an American first because I’ve lived in so many different places. Plus both of my parents are ex military….
