College of Surgeons…true name?

Here’s an email that I sent to the College of Surgeons today. I am currently awaiting a response.

Subject: College of Surgeons…the true name?

I was just in your building in Chicago yesterday for a meeting. Someone informed me that the College of Surgeons isn’t actually a college in the sense of like a university. It’s more like an organization.

I found that rather odd. My theory is that when your organization was founded back in 1913, it was really meant to be called the Colleagues of Surgeons. Someone back in 1913 just mispelled the name as “College” instead of “Colleagues.”

Is this true? I think so, this makes perfect sense to me.

Or refer to a dictionary, and look up “college.” You’ll find a secondary definition (beneath the common definition) that defines the word as a body or group with common interests or purpose. -D
