Moon’s size compared to Earth

NASA says they have a goal to men on Mars by 2037. “We are looking at the moon and Mars to build a civilization for tomorrow and after that,” Griffin added in while addressing heads of the world’s space agencies.

Why even bother setting up a colony to live on Mars? The Moon is certainly a lot closer. Is the Moon not big enough for us? There’s so much room on the moon!

Surface area:

  • 7,884,254 km ≤ Mainland USA
  • 30,221,532 km ≤ Africa
  • 37,930,000 km ≤  Moon
  • 510,065,600 km ≤ Earth

The moon is just a bit bigger than Africa. Here’s a size comparison of the Moon to Earth:

The surface area of the moon is the equivalent to 4.8 mainland USAs:

Assuming that the volume of the moon is 2.1968×10^10 km^3 and an average grain of sand is 0.00000000000243 km^3.. it would take about 9,040,329,218,106,995,884,773 grains of sand for spudart to build a lifesize replica of the moon.

Oops.. wasn’t consistent with my units. 1 grain of sand = 2.43×10^-12 km3

The graphics are awesome. You should pursue freelance work designing graphics. There’s been some classics on your blog. The postage stamp cost increase is one that comes to mind.

Cartoon Network recently aired the Futurama episode where they had to deliver a package to the Moon. Fry was all pumped up about going to the Moon while the rest of the crew was less than thrilled. The moon was a giant cheesey theme park/carnival. It was a very entertaining episode.

Futurama is one of my all-time favorite shows! Did you know that Cartoon Network is bringing back new episodes next year?! HOORAY!

This is very interesting and educational. And imagine when people believed the earth was flat. Is this how they pictured it? Did they picture the moon the same way? Hmm.
