The Cubs are going to clinch the pennant at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. I’m going to the ballpark during the game, and hang outside left field. (not inside the park, but outside.)
I was thinking of anything wacky that I could wear to the game. Like the Ivy-man, or the neon-light man.
Some ideas I had were to dress up as:
- Wrigley Field marquee
- Wrigley Field Scoreboard (with face painted to look like the clock)
- Wrigley Field bricks
- But then it hit me… A FREAKIN BIG SAMMY SOSA HEAD. My face could poke outside his hat, with my face painted blue with a red C.
Here is a Sammy Sosa illustration I did last night.
To get the colors on the foam core, I’m thinking of painting them on with acrylic.
I’ll also make a big word bubble to attach to his face. And when people ask to take their picture with me, I’ll ask them what they want Sammy to say. And they could write it out on an 8.5×11 sheet of paper and attach it to the bubble. I would collect these sheets, and the whole collection would kinda be like a work of art.
Questions
- Does my illustration look like Sammy Sosa?
- Do you think these size is good, or should I try to go bigger?
- Is acrylic on foam core a good idea? Or should I use a different media?
- Should I make a back for this too? (either another die-cut shape with the back of Sammy’s head. Or maybe just a sheet hanging over my back to cover my body up.)

Hey Matt, now you’ve got all winter to not only do the Giant Sammy Head, but a Giant Dusty Head, a Giant Kerry Head, a Giant Prior Head, and more! Don’t forget a Giant Randall Simon Head!
and don’t forget about my favorite player, Paul Bako (“Prison Break”).
And a Giant Lofton Head! And a Giant Aramis Ramirez Head! You prolly don’t have to do a Giant Grudzielanek Head. Maybe a Giant Karros Head though, that might be cool. If you do a Giant Clement Head, would you include that Black Forest under his chin? I guess you’d have too since he looks pretty much like anyone without it. Wow! You’re going to be a busy little spud this winter! But it’ll be worth it since we’re going to the World Series in ’04!

Clement said he was gonna shave off the beard for next year. He already shaved it this year, and he sucked horribly, so he regrew it. So we’ll see what sort of pitcher he is next year.
Maybe Clement will decide he likes looking like Scott Ian from Anthrax and keep the secret garden.
