Chicagoist rips on Oprah’s new logo. Making fun of it because it has serifs and bold colors. If you ask me, sometimes people are too negative. Anything that’s is bright and positive, has to get a snarky negative response.
Here’s my comment I left on their blog post:
I dunno. I think we are in the day where we can have gradients in logos. That was back in the day when printing was really poor and we could only do two-color jobs. Now as long as OWN has a version of their logo for one-color jobs, then that’s fine.
I kinda like the logo. It’s a little crazy. But hey, it’s pushing the edge a little, and not in a stupid Gap box way.
What do you think of the OWN logo?

could be better. could be worse. What’s most intriguing about this logo is the message that Oprah is sending with this logo. She’s looking to empower and uplift her largely female audience. She wants her legions to take OWNership of their lives and lead a fulfilling life. That’s what this logo is trying to say. In some ways it works, in other ways it could be better. The logo has a dimensional shape with its shadows and detailed sheen. By objectifying the type, the sense of ownership is emphasized. The serifs try to lend a level of class and avoid the logo from looking too childish because of its possible association with children’s blocks. My biggest beef is with the varying thicknesses of the color bars in the letters. When the color bars of each letter are compared to one another, they just don’t jive that well with each other. The middle color bar of the W is slightly thicker than the color bar of the N. And then the color bars of the O are quite a bit different than the W and N all together. Overall though, I think this logo accomplishes what it sets out to do as mentioned in the beginning of this comment.
I think people like to knock things down rather than building things up. Oprah’s logo is a fine logo. Could it be better? Sure. Most things could be improved. But good points on Oprah wanting people to take OWNership of their lives. I don’t agree with her on many spiritual points, but I can agree with her that people do need to take ownership of their lives. (to an earthly extent, but if you get into the spiritual realm, we truly don’t own our lives, God owns our lives and your perspective of ownership flows from that)
I’ve been thinking about this since you first posted it and I finally came to the conclusion that the design is one giant YAWN-FEST. What a snooze! Could it really be anymore bor-ing?
Really! You think this logo is boring? Look at all the colors!
I don’t think the colors work, just because something is colorful doesn’t mean it is exciting or fresh or new. I think the logo is a bore By the way, there was a font joke on TV the other day and I LOL’d and my friend who was watching with me said “Only you would find that funny … a font joke!” Then I laughed at that and thought of you
i think people want more design. Take away the fancy colors and the glittery 3d effects and you have a very simple serif logo. That said, colors and glittery effects are indeed design elements and they are what drive this logo, love it or hate it.
I don’t see why a logo can’t be simple. Take away the colors and 3d effects, and it’s still a fine logo. Big bold letters saying OWN. And slight serifs to give a little bit of personality.
I still contend that it is one big yawn … and mostly I blame the font
