Chicago McDonalds decked out with $2000 designer furniture

Here are photos from the (not-so) exclusive opening at the Chicago Supersize McDondalds at Clark, Ohio and Ontario Street today on April 15, 2005.

The Giant McDonalds on Steriods in downtown Chicago

The wait wasn't too terribly long.

The even have $1,995.00 Le Corbu Petit Confort chairs up on the second floor!!! What a contrast. McDonalds and expensive designer chairs.

And a $2,495.00 Nelson Marshmallow Sofa too. I'm pretty sure I saw some Pavilion Chairs as well.

The double drive-through in the back of the restaurant is nicely designed with the double arches.

the interior sorta reminds me of the McD's we went to in Times Square.

so this is what replaced the Rock-n-Roll McD's in River North? it is in the same spot?

what did you eat there? have you not seen "Supersize Me"?

Posted by: laura on Apr 15, 05 | 3:52 pm

I had a cheeseburger and fries. They had no dollar menu, so i could not get my dollar side salad. Normally, i have a dollar side side and a hamburger.

I have not seen Supersize Me. While yes, McDonalds can be bad for you, sometimes I wonder if it's an elitism thing involved as well. If you are not a vegetarian, one hamburger will not kill you.

This has replaced the Rock-n-Roll McDonalds. They certainly popped it up there fast.

I have to admit that while I wonder about how some people are anti-McDonald elitists, that if I proudly wear a McDonalds badge, because it "gets with with the everyday people." If that's so, than I'm proud of it.

Posted by: spudart on Apr 15, 05 | 3:57 pm

i'm not elitist. not because of McD's, anyway.

Posted by: laura on Apr 15, 05 | 6:19 pm

I don't eat at McDonald's, but I wouldn't call myself an anti-McDonald's elitist. Am I an elitist if my values include staying away from food that is bad for me or not supporting corporate giants like McDonald's or Starbucks? I don't believe so.

Impressive post nonetheless. I love that you have links to Design Within Reach for those of us like myself who loves that place and is slowly crossing things off my wish list there as I get ready to move into my new space! :^)

I try to avoid having *too* much McDonald's as a matter of personal health, but I'm not anti-McD's or anytihng. And, as a side note, I do like their new Fish Bits thing with the sweet chili sauce. Mmm . . .

Le Corbu Petit Confort chairs? Nelson Marshmallow Sofa? are those authentic or are they cheap rip-offs?

I want to see fuzzy purple Grimace fabric on the Marshmallow Sofa and black & white striped leather (Hamburglar-esque) on the Le Corbu Petit Confort chairs!

I wish they added like 30 more yellow french fry arches on the Clark and Ohio McDonalds. I like those big McDonalds arches. They're sorta alien-like, yet happy and cheerful, yet strong and dominating.

Posted by: unlikelymoose.com on Apr 22, 05 | 10:11 am

your mcdonalds post made me hungry for mcdonalds. So i went there for lunch today. I haven't had lunch at mcdonalds in a long time.

i just wanted two plain cheeseburgers and small fry. But the cost of plain cheeseburger is the same as a double cheeseburger! $1. I didn't want just a double cheeseburger and a small fry (and tap water). So i ordered two double cheeseburgers. that was a little too much. It was very tasty though.

Posted by: unlikelymoose.com on Apr 22, 05 | 1:04 pm

they should have done that with chipotles

How late is this fancy shmancy McD's open until? Also, do they offer the "McNifica" sandwhich? (the oversized Big Mac...)

Posted by: Sara on Apr 28, 05 | 10:21 pm

The McNifica? I never heard of it! Where do they have that?

The menu at this McDonalds is rather standard, I didn't see anything special on it.

Posted by: spudart on Apr 29, 05 | 6:11 am

The McNifica is a Big Mac, but twice its normal size. I've had it in Europe...but then again, European McDonalds have a bigger menu. I just thought that a crazy McD's like this one would have a crazy, extended menu...

can I work at mc donalds

Posted by: shameka on Jun 21, 05 | 11:52 am

Actually, even if you're not a vegetarian, one hamburger could kill you... I'm trying not to be too hyperbolic or alarmist, but if you read Fast Food Nation, you know them cattle factory operations ain't nothin' nice. Did somebody say "mad cow?"

Posted by: Eric Vinyl on Feb 16, 06 | 1:33 pm

FYI..."mad cow disease" poses zero harm to humans, it is the cows themselves that can be affected.

The only downside for us is obviously the fact that cows = dying, is bad.

Get your facts straight before you post, don't just watch the news for 5 minutes, fill in the blanks with assumptions, then declare yourself an expert.

I haven't been to Chicago for a few years and was looking forward to showing the Rock-n-Roll McD's to a friend I'm coming up there with this weekend. Is all the old R-n-R stuff gone from this new one or is it in there along with the new furniture/design? I'm so disappointed to learn that the old building is gone. Progress - sigh.

Posted by: Karen on Aug 06, 06 | 11:27 am

Karen, I'm not sure if any of the old R-n-R stuff is still in there. I should go up there for lunch someday and see. I have a feeling it's all gone.

This past weekend the girls and I were in Chicago. We happened to see this and thought we had to stop by before we left. So that first night we went into to parking lot parked, went inside for a quick potty break, bought food, ate, and then left. We were shocked to find out that a bottle of water was $3.00 and parking was $8 for the 15 minutes we were in there. All in all the damage was close to 40$ and we didn't get anything but mc nuggets & water.

Thats crazy!

Hey, I'm no anti-Mickey D's guy, though I rarely go there (Filet O'Fish and the fries are the only things I like there).

I've been to this Mickey's...pretty nice place. Have a bunch of old photos of Chicago along with some interesting trivia, etc. Kind of a nice place to hang out, to be honest. Love the urban design, too.

We were here last night after a House of Blues show, and it's ridiculous that there aren't free refills on drinks, especially when it's 75% ice in the first place. What a ripoff.

It doesn't take a lot to explain how the food is at the huge McDonald's downtown as it is the exact same as every other. The size and atmosphere are worth the sight as it is a lot different than any other McDonald's I've seen. Escalators, plasma televisions, and leather couches fill up the two story fast food restaurant, which makes it a sight to see. It's a good experience for a McDonald's. If you happen to be around the area, stop in and see this unique McDonald's, but I wouldn't pay for a meal as there is to many other good restaurants in Chicago.

If I had to pick, I would say the Chicken Selects, but my favorite thing here is all the neat things in the building.
