Is Arial really a copy of Helvetica? I've recently started appreciating Arial, as long as it's bolded and at 8.5. I know a few designers who LOVE Helvetica and I never understood it until I started playing with the tiny but bold Arial.
great jokes. I'm rolling on the floor with laughter. Well, not really. But they still are very amusing.
history of Arial:

basically, Microsoft ripped off Helvetica in 1982. What a surprise. Microsoft ripped off someone else's work.
Arial lacks the refinement and diversity/assortment Helvetica does. While the differences are small, they can be appreciated. Helveticas upper case R for example.
