Backyard Olympics now officially formed

The brilliant post by Erik Maldre about how badminton should have more TV time has inspired the formation of a new olympics. An olympics that is based on the sports that everyone can play. The sports that reside in our backyards. The grand sports of badminton, croquet, grass volleyball, whiffleball, running bases. And it shall be called “BACKYARD OLYMPICS.”

I’m not so sure these are the sports we want to watch on T.V. These are the sports we want to play [Is that a camera crew hanging around the horseshoe pit?”> I want to watch the phenoms of the Olympics blow me away with their athletic abilities and cheer them on to victory, full-well knowing I could never do what they are doing. That makes good T.V. in my book. But yes! Afterwards, I want to go outside and play all those backyard sports you mention. Croquet! Badminton! Lawn Darts! “You’ll put your eye out!” Horseshoes! [And down on the farm we used the real thing!”> Lawn Volleyball! Whiffleball! [I never could pitch it very fast!”> When I get my house with a yard, I’m going to be the King of Backyard Olympics in my neighborhood!

people dont realize how difficult badminton actually is. you have to be in really good shape, because you are running around all over the place. though i hear lawn darts are illegal these days, cuz, well you are throwing a large projectile with a sharp tip..

I’m not sure that Lawn Darts are actually illegal, though they may be available any longer, at least the ones with the sharp metal tip. I never had the “original” Lawn Darts, the ones I had weighted ends, kinda like a badminton birdie filled with fishing leads. They may not put your eye out, but they could give you a black eye.

I want to hear more about the backyard olympics! I have a great backyard sport that I would like to submit for inclusion. (I have been a backyard athlete all of my life. Wiffle Ball was my first passion.) A couple of years ago on the 4th of July 2002, I invented, along with five co-inventors, the sport of volotennis in my backyard. Volotennis is a paddle sport that blends elements from tennis and badminton. It uses plastic paddles and a plastic ball instead of rackets and a birdie. The rules and scoring are very simple and it is easy to learn and play. If interested, check out my web site http://www.volotennis.com

Pick-A-Paddle(TM) Paddles are 8 bucks a pop. How about i buy a cheap-o ping pong paddle for 2 bucks and drill a bunch of holes in it?
