Earth and Sun to Scale

This artwork is quite long. To view the artwork click here: earth and sun to scale. In this file, the Sun is the circle on the left. To view the earth, scroll all the way to the right through outer space, and you’ll arrive at the super-duper tiny dot on the far right. The dot is really tiny, but it’s there.

Here’s the stats:

  • Diameter of earth: 40,000 km
  • Diameter of sun: 1,391,000 km
  • Distance of sun from earth: 150,000,000 km

I took these dimensions and scaled them down into an Illustrator file, but keeping true to the ratios of the diameters and distance.

It’s much more impressive to see this printed out to scale. I have it hanging on my file cabinets at work with a 100-inch long printout (8′ 4″).

Our planet is so incredibly tiny in comparison with outer space. I always pictured it being a big ball, but really it’s a dot. It’s amazing how much God created to exist on this tiny dot.

In this diagram, there are 365 lines coming out of the sun. Between each ray is one earth day. So when you locate our planet earth, you can see how long it takes for us to travel in one day. Our planet moves really fast for its size! It’s another marvel on how everything is held together.

For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:16-17

I think the Sun & Earth is a great concept and scrolling to the right is a cool idea rather than clicking on a new link. Im also liking the photography but it all says 2002, its now 2005, lets see some new material dude! Btw, I found this site by accident whilst looking for some email confidentiality text on a google search. 😉
