If America was smaller would it make it easier for people to move away?

When America messes up so much that people get tired of living here, we’ll joke about moving to Canada. But really. Canada?

A) It’s so far away.

B) It’s Canada.

But what if we lived in Europe. Couldn’t you just move to another country much easier? There’s countries all crammed together. The proximity of countries is kinda like our states here. But do people in Europe do that? Do people in the Czech Republic grow weary of V√°clav Klaus that they move to Poland?

If America was smaller – *I* might move to Poland. An interesting statistic, for me at least, would be how many U.S. citizens living in states that share a border with Canada emigrate to Canada each year. I’m guessing it’s more than their “emigrate to Mexico” counterparts.

Canada isn’t that far away, not for some anyway. When I lived in Detroit, a car ride to Windsor Ontario took no time at all. I guess for others, Mexico isn’t that far away either. Anyway, I’ve toyed with the idea of moving to Brussels.

I wonder if the EU makes it easier for folks in one European country to move to another. Passports, visas, similar currency the euro, etc. aren’t needed when traveling. Relocation?

Imagine if the ‘old u,s, of a didn’t work out as planned and each state became essentially its own nation. I wonder what states would have the most wars with one another and what states would be the most buddy-buddy.

Moose – I think we’d all take out Ohio pretty darn quick if that were the situation. 😛

With EU Citizenship, you can pretty much move within EU borders with ease, and live in other countries. Language would be your only impediment, but most Europeans are multi lingual.

I can see the US out my window from where I sit at my computer, but this is the first time I’ve considered moving there (due to your blog post about Canada). Can’t say it’s likely something I’d ever do though. But I like visiting the states. 🙂
