Woodpeckers are pretty funny how they can climb trees

I’m working on my front porch watching a woodpecker climb up our large Slippery Elm (aka Red Elm). It kinda scoots along the tree, looks in the bark, scoots along some more, looks in the bark.

The way it scoots, it almost looks like a giant bug with a red head climbing up our tree. Ironic, since it’s looking for bugs.

I was waiting for it to peck peck peck the tree. But it never did. Which I guess I’m glad it didn’t? Because I don’t want that tree to have a bunch of holes in it. It gives really nice shade on our house.
