Drinking caffeine will make the joints in my fingers to make cracking sounds. The caffeine will also make my hands hurt overall. I don’t drink soda or coffee very often (maybe once a week) and EVERY time the next morning, my hands will crack and hurt a bit.
My dad drinks coffee every day and his hands also hurt. I’ve been trying to get him to try stop drinking coffee for one week and see what happens. I’m absolutely convinced that it happens to me. Any one else experience the same thing with caffeine?

Maybe it’s because you’re typing harder when intoxicated on caffeine? Or, you’re cracking your fingers more? I’ve only had the headaches from withdrawl.
You might want to do some research on gout.
I completely gave up soda pop 2 1/2 years ago (except Cubs games and when I’m out of state). My hands feel no such aching feelings and I am your twin brother. Your caffeine theory is curious. It would be very interesting to see what would happen if Dad gave up coffee. There’s a lot of bad stuff in soda pop. Yes, it is the sweet nectar of life, but it can mess you up bad. I am a pop addict. I used to drink about four 16 oz cups of pop during lunch every day thanks to the muse that is the refill machine. The only way to reduce my intake was to cut it off completely. I remember exactly where I was when I went cold turkey. I was in my in-laws’ basement and I told my father-in-law that I was going to give up pop. I decided to amend this lifestyle change by allowing myself to drink pop when I am outside the state of Illinois. I rarely travel beyond state lines; the last time being my San Diego trip in June 2006. And I allow myself to drink pop when at Wrigley Field. I don’t drink beer at Cubs games and my only other real option for beverages is pop and I refuse to pay $4 for a bottle of water. My streak goes back to February 2005.
i don’t have caffiene enough to know, but now I must experiment.
I think Dad would have serious withdrawl aches worse than his hands if he tried to give up coffee for a week. I have one cup of coffee every morning. When I tried to stop, it was bad!! So I continue to limit myself to one cup every morning. I do have the occasional diet coke when I’m @ cubs games or visiting the folks. In either case, my hands don’t hurt. Dad’s used his hands his whole life as a photographer. . . . working in the chemicals and manipulating cameras. Not too mention the jobs related to the old house. I think that and a heritary disposition may have more do with his achy hands than caffeine.
It has the opposite effect on me. Caffeine makes my joints feel better! I have had chronic sore neck and whenever I drink coke/energy drinks it feels much better.
You could be on to something Matt. I guzzle coffee stuff all morning and often well into the afternoon, and my joints are constantly creaking and popping, especially my hands and elbows. I have always thought it was from typing on the computer all day, but maybe the coffee’s just making it worse. Damn, I’m already an old man at 26. Arthritis here I come!
You should have him take a calcium supplement, caffine can suck calcium from your bones.
Yes, it seems we are a smaller minority than I may have thought. I have nearly crippling joint cracking and pain, surely aggravated by major sleep disturbances, surely furthuring the issue of dependence on caffeine. Just coffee, for the most part, seems to be the culprit, although other such dark delicacies as chocolate anything will aggravate the situation. I feel like a speed freak, and tho I do love the deep dark stuff, I gottsta stay alive in a body I can tolerate…ahh. think it’s gotta be RA.,
This cracking and aching is happening to my mother. She complained after having some very strong coffee at a restaurant. I know that she drinks coffee and colas all day so I suggested that she lay off to see if it helped. She just got mad at me. I really need to know – any conclusions yet?
