U B the Judge
This design competition is unlike other competitions because entries appear in regional events throughout the country and designers in attendance judge the work of their peers.
To qualify, entries must be produced all, or in part, on Utopia between January 1 and December 31, 2004. Awards are presented to the winning Creative/Design firms and every regional event will have platinum and gold level awards in two different categories: commercial/public service and self-promotion. Each level receives its own unique award designed by Tiffany & Company and will be featured on the Utopia website, in press releases and in a nationally distributed showbook.

Regional Design Annual Deadline Extension Announced. Print announces a deadline extension for the 2005 Regional Design Annual. April 5 is the new deadline. (march 1 was the old deadline).
I just got a poster in the mail for Mohawk’s competition. And it made me wonder how many paper companies have design competitions. It certainly is a good incentive for a designer to choose that paper over another. So here’s the summary of 2005 design competitions put on by paper companies: Utopia Paper: U B the Judge: 2/11/2005 Stora Enso: What Teams Can Do: 2/28/2005 International Paper: Best on Press: 2/28/2005 Stora Enso: Teamwork: 3/31/2005 Sappi: Ideas that Matter: ?5/2005? Mohawk: Show 6: 5/31/2005 Neenah: Letterhead Paperworks: Monthly Neenah: Text and Cover Paperworks: Quarterly (you can find the details on these competitions above in the full post)
Thanks for doing this, it’s awesome! I am trying to determine which shows to enter based off 2 criteria, any advice? The criterea are 1. Target’s exposure (winning work) in the annuals must attract great creatives 2. Winning in the various shows creates recognition for our creative team. Out of all of those shows, which ones would you remommend we enter?
Charlotte, i’m a little confused. Are you entering work you’ve done for Target? And you are looking for a good competition to submit to?
hello, sorry to have not checked for your response sooner than this. I am entering work that has been created by our staff and in some instances of behalf of some ad agencies that have done work for us. We have been struggling to hone our list of award shows and determine which ones fit our criteria the best. Our criteria, why we enter shows, is two fold. One to attract the brightest talent/Recruitment and two is to provide our staff recognition. Without my list getting to beserk and unmanageable proportions (there is only one of me here) I want only to enter the best shows that fit our criteria. Do you have an opinion?
Charlotte, I work at a 6-designer in-house agency. In the past years we have entered Print, Communication Arts, AIGA, and Graphic Design USA. We have a large amount of success with the Graphic Design USA annual getting about 10-12 entries accepted every year. While the others mentioned above have not accepted a single entry. Could it be that other places tend to accept entries more from particular agencies? perhaps. Could it be that our work is just more geared to the tastes of Graphic Design USA, and not the others. Perhaps. Maybe there’s just much more entries into CA and Print, making the chances lower. Probably. Granted Graphic Design USA may be seen as a notch lower than Print or Communication Arts. But in my humble opinion, the work in Graphic Design USA is just as good as the work in the other annuals. It’s a tossup, but we just find GD USA easier to get into, and we are very glad to have our work accepted by them. It’s a joy to see your printed in a real magazine.
thank you for the insight. I appreciate your time. There is no real formula, darn.
Communication Arts has extended their deadline from June 3, 2005 to June 10, 2005 Communication Arts Design and Advertising Annual * Logo/Corporate Identity * Web/Interactive * Radio * Television http://www.commarts.com
And FYI, even though it’s too late now, but for the record. Graphic Design USA extended their deadline to May 27, 2005. It’s a little screwed up because their website says May 20. The pdf form says April 30. But trust me, there’s an ad in the May 2005 GDUSA issue that says May 27.
I went through my sources and updated the list. From August 2005 to the end of the year there are now 40 new competitions added to the list.
