Imagine your country celebrating their Independence day while the Olympics are happening. And then what if a country won a gold medal on their Independence day and had their flag raised with their national anthem playing? Here’s how the countries performed with Independence days during the Olympics:
- July 28 – Peru: 0 medals
- August 1 – Dahomey: Did not participate
- August 1 – Switzerland: 2 gold, 2 silver on August 4, 5, 8
- August 5 – Upper Volta: Did not participate
- August 6 – Bolivia: 0 medals
- August 6 – Jamaica: 4 gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze on August 8, 9, 10, 11
- August 7 – Ivory Coast: Did not participate
- August 9 – Singapore: 2 bronze on August 1 & 7
- August 10 – Ecuador: 0 medals
No country won a medal on their Independence day during the 2012 Olympics. You’d have to think if an athlete was performing on the during their country’s independence, that they would really push harder to get gold. Or some sort of medal. Too bad it didn’t happen.
I’ve gotta look up to see if the Olympics were ever held on July 4th.
I like to think all those countries who didn’t participate in the Olympics got together in a bar and watched the Olympics together.
It’s interesting to see a list of countries that did not participate in the Olympics.
