Sense of self through memories

The author of the book “Why Time Flies: A Mostly Scientific Investigation” appeared on one of my favorite podcasts this week, “Something You Should Know” He had this interesting insight:

For us, time has this whole other layer. Psychologists would say that your sense of self. Of who you are. Is really rooted in your ability to understand that the person you were yesterday. And the memories that you had about yesterday will belong to you next week and next year.

Your sense of self is the understanding that yourself will remain the same through time.

Time has this element of consciousness for us.

Added his book to my wish list. Why Time Flies: A Mostly Scientific Investigation

He’s on Twitter @alanburdick Interesting. @chrisaldrich follows him. Funny how you run into interesting people following interesting people.
