What is a good hosting server for websites?

I often get asked by people where is a good place to host their site. I’ll tell them not to go with olm.net (i’ve had major problems with them), or nomonthly (their basic plans do not include MySQL). Generally $10-$12 is a good deal for a basic site.

I am currently with data393 and have a plan that allows for 30 domains. It’s been nice and fast. 100% uptime the past month! If anyone wants their site hosted on my plan, I’ll throw you on.

But the point of this post is not to sell my services, but rather it’s an idea. There should be some site out there that pings a ton of websites and keeps track of where they are hosted. So then you can truly see what the uptime percentage is with certain hosting companies. Currently, I’m using dotuptime.com, which is a free service where you can enter in a bunch of URLs for them to ping every 20 minutes. They will tell you how much downtime there is, and the percentage of uptime over any period of time. You can even get emails when any of your sites are down. And it’s free! (The catch is if you want it to ping your site more than 20 minutes, you have to pay.)

But it would be nice if there was some site that tracked a TON of sites and let you know what hosting companies are the best. Anyone know of any service like this?

About two years ago, I took advantage of an offer from 1&1 that gave you three years of free hosting with almost unlimited domain hosting. It’s worked reasonably well for me, but I’m not certain what I’ll do when the freebie expires. Go Daddy has worked out well for me in terms of domain registration and for hosting individual sites — I just wish they had a plan that included multiple domains. Same for iPowerweb, where I have a single site hosted. On a similar note, I recently got into it with a Verisign rep who maintained that they really are worth something like three times what Go Daddy charges for domain registration. Does anybody even use these folks for routine rgistrations? The only reason I still have a domain registered with them is I keep missing the window to transfer it to Go Daddy.

is GoDaddy just for domain registration, or are they a good choice for web hosting too? i’ve recently registered a domain through NameSecure, but don’t know what host to go with for it [i’m with NoMonthly for some other sites, but want to try something new”>. i wish there was some kind of honest rating system out there. there seem to be a billion web hosts, but who knows which of them are any good?

back when we first discussed this, you directed me to a blogging program called WordPress. they recommended a web host called BlueHost, which is really cheap [like $7 a month”> with a lot of features. today i asked a professional web designer what web host they use or recommend, just to get another opinion. they recommended BlueHost! that’s a mighty interesting coincidence. i think i will be trying them out myself. anyone else have experience with BlueHost?
